Edward Harris House Owner & Innkeeper,
Susan Alvarez
In November 1995, Susan and husband Manny began renovating the 1896 mansion for their private residence. The couple
raised their two daughters in the home until both left for college, moving on to points
South in search of warmer climate. With a solid background in pharmaceutical
sales and direct patient care, Susan "jumped the corporate ship" and used her
entrepreneurial spirit to open several retail gift stores in the suburbs of
Rochester. With many successful years under her belt and a large "empty
nest" - Susan decided that their home just might be the perfect location to
open a bed and breakfast.
With the guidance of local designer and long time friend Donna Ehmann (of
Donna Ehmann Interiors), the home was completely renovated, repainted and restored using the original architectural plans for the home - with the addition of all new ensuite bathrooms. There was nothing left untouched!
"The Inn opened in early 2000 and hasn't slowed down yet!" states Susan, who is also actively involved
in her local travel industry associations
(The Empire State B&B Association, Greater Rochester Visitors Association)
and is a founding member of The Greater Rochester Bed and Breakfast
Association. Susan's interests include antiquing, reading, theater, art, home
décor and gardening.
Always a warm and gregarious host and an excellent cook, Susan's husband Manny loves entertaining, antiquing, reading, sports, wine and travel; and enjoys watching the financial aspect associated with the Inn. Manny graduated from Bryant
College in Providence, RI with a B.A. in Business Administration, becoming a
Certified Public Accountant. He has traveled the world extensively with
Xerox Corporation for the past 29 years in corporate finance.
The Inn has enjoyed much media attention over the years. This year, the Inn was honored when voted ILoveInns and American
Historic Inns prestigious "2009 Top 10 Most Romantic Inns" of North America.
